Angry taskcat.exe in Task Manager

Taskcat.exe shows up as a process that uses most of my CPU even during idle time on my PC. What is it? I cannot end this process. I have run Spybot 3.2 but this does not come up. vbanti.exe and others like faxwave.exe come up in the task manager but I can end these processes and when I do, the PC runs much faster. Any help would be appreciated.

Google turns up no mention of this process at all. But it does suggest "taskbar.exe". Are you certain you have the correct spelling and process name?

I would certainly look at doing a virus scan in safe mode; firstly disable system restore! Then do an online AV scan.

Look at this page to see if this is what the process is..

taskbar.exe

Check for Sophos virus or variants.

taskcat.exe

Thanks for your replies. But it IS taskcat.exe. There is also a taskbar.exe but it doesn't consume much PC effort. Since almost everyone I talk to has not heard of taskcat.exe, or does not have it on their Task Manager, I assume it is a bad worm or virus. Norton does not find it, nor does Spybot 3.2. Any good ideas to get rid of it would be appreciated.

Try Ad-aware as well as Spybot. Turn off system restore while you run full scans again!.
Try this online virus scan: http://www.pandasoftware.com/actives..._principal.htm

And this online trojan scan: http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/

Look in add/remove programs for anything that may be related to a Taskbar. This could include something like coolwebsearch etc.
Be carefull not to delete anything you need!.
Also look in your startup list in msconfig to see if there is anything in there that looks suspect.

I had the same thing on one of my PC's, so I googled it, and this thread was all that came up.

Is what I did to get rid of it is restarted in safe mode, then used the search function and searched for "taskcat" and "tacksat" (trust me, there are files named tacksat). Turned up about 5 or 6 files, mainly in C:\WINDOWS\Security\logs. I then just deleted everything the search turned up. Seems to have worked for me as "taskcat.exe" hasn't been back for about a week now. I'm no tech guru by any means, but thats what worked for me, so I thought I would share it with you, and anyone else that might turn up here thanks to google. Good Luck!
