Cd read problems in XP

Windows XP does not like to detect cd's when inserted into the drive.

I have been having this issue for a while now and i have no idea how to fix the problem..

Basicly when ever i insert a cd during an instance within XP it will not read the cd till i enter into my computer and explore the disc. Usually windows picks them up and if it is a game cd then it autoplays the title.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue or what might be the source of the problem. I have replaced cables and it transfers data fine from hdd to burner, dvd-hdd etc etc.

thnx.
Jeff

I have had the same proplem. it will work for a while when i first log in. I found the only way to make it work is to log off and then log back in. then it will work again till u want to put in a new cd.

same here it says that so and so much is used but it wont show the files or let me access them. It will ether show how much is used and say nothing is free or it will show how much free space is left. the only way i can use the files on the disk is by loging off everyone completely from the computer and then loging back in (which is so anoying when i want to play games or i'm in the middle of stuff ).

Are you using an older cdrom drive?

Perhaps a $10 cdrom cleaner from Radio Shack would do the trick.

I know that has worked for me on some older 8X drives I have.

that doesn't help

thats only telling you what to do if their software doesn't start. My autorun works at first but after my computer has been running for a while i can't even see the files on the cd.
