windows loading screen
hi all, im new here.....
i have windows xp home edition. when i turn the computer on, as you know it goes through the little startup mode thing, then it comes to the
Windows XP
Home Edition
and right here it has the loading symbol(the green thing moving to the right several times)
^^^^^^^ well that lasts for at least 15 minutes before it goes to the user log in screen. how do i fix this? i've used adaware, tried virus scans, freed some memory, deleted some of my new programs.....but it still does it
my computer also freezes and restarts all the time when i have alot of programs running at the same times (outlook, firefox, media player, etc)
help is greatly appreciated

Re: windows loading screen
cgreenlee88, that's way too long. I suggest you do an online virus scan. Have you done an AV scan in safe mode?
When you are at your desktop with no visible programs open, what is your CPU reading as "idle"?
Before going into your startup sector, I think the AV checks are an ASAP priority.
Try this one for starters...
Trend
Then do your usual AV in safe mode and post back.
Your PC restarting suggests a Virus imo.

Little more info if you can plz
how much ram, what type of ram, how fast is it
size of hdd, speed of hdd
Mother board etc etc
basically everything u can about the machine
how long have you had the machine what did you do to it, when did this start to happen
info is good, stops us guessing
a k6-2 max cpu speed is 550mhz, thats pretty slow but not bare minimum for XP

right click on my computer and hit properties when your computer has loaded. you should be able to get the CPU and ram size there. then go into my computer and rightclick on your local drive (probably C and hit properties. you can also try searching using search to find dxdiag.exe in windows/system32 and running that. it will tell you alot about your computer and is probably more acurate than windows

Chris,
Close all Programs, hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete.....the task manager will appear, down the bottom of that screen it says "CPU useage"....can you tell us what the number is?
Do this ASAP.
Download this tool, follow the instructions, and run this free program.
Stinger
Your RAM is not a great deal for XP, Chris, so don't expect great start up times, but we should be able to work on that after. I am 99% sure you have a virus.

Chris, The poster above, "Triplate" is right [as per usual] it probably is Sasser.
You must go here-> Symantec and download the removal tool. You only have a short time to do this before your PC will reboot.
If you cannot get the instructions due to your PC rebooting, PM me and I will send you the instructions and the removal tool by email. But to carry this out, you are going to have to be fast.
When we have you all cleaned up, we will see what you have starting up at boot time, and see if we can improve on that. But I hope you will install a free firewall, and a free anti virus if you don't already have them
