remote desktop - server screen resolution

I recently upgraded from 2000 to XP SP2. I used VNC extensively to operate on a PC remotely, since 2000 doesn't have the Remote Desktop server.

Now that I'm at XP, I was hoping to not have to install VNC, due to Remote Desktop. Remote Desktop definitely has performance advantages.

Anyway, often I connect from a low-res (800x600) screen laptop to my higher-res (1280x1024) desktop.

In my experience, this will cause Remote Desktop to temporarily reset my desktop's screen resolution to 800x600, thereby screwing up all my window positions / sizes.

With VNC, it didn't automatically resize the server desktop. Instead you would see the server's screen at full resolution, and have to scroll to see it all. Some versions even have a scaling factor so you can see the whole 1280x1024 desktop on a 800x600 screen, but it can be kind of hard to read due to the scaling factors.

There are benefits and drawbacks to all methods, but it really pisses me off when Windows messes with my Window positions and sizes. Is there a way to get the remote desktop server to behave more like one of those VNC modes?

Hm, no replies in 6+ months. Still haven't found an answer to this question, so I'm hoping this reply brings it back to the top of the forum, and maybe someone will have an idea now . . .

My only suggestion is to not use vnc and start using radmin. Never had a problem with window sizes, uses little bandwidth and is very reliable.
