DVD Drive Doesn't Work after SP2 Update

Is there a way for me to troubleshoot my computer myself? I have a T2482 E-machine computer running Windows XP Home edition, with a CD-RW drive and a DVD-R drive. Both worked fine before the latest Service Pack update, now the DVD-R drive doesn't work. When I go to "my computer" and click on the drive, the disc isn't recognized. Using the Microsoft device manager, I checked both drives and got a message that they were both operating properly. I was previously able to play DVDs through both Windows Media Player and Power DVD. The computer is about a year old, if that is relevant. Thanks, any help is appreciated.

in this case try to uninstall sp2,
go to start-settings-control panel-add or remove programs-select sp2-and click remove

and see what happens
