Question SP2 query

I decided to put SP2 my school laptop hoping it would work alright, seeings as its working fine on my desktop. i put it on, and windows went crazy, i can't remeber the exact problems but everything went wrong. i then tried, unsucessfully, system restore and uninstalling SP2. so i scraped off all my work after 4 or 5 wrecked cds, curtesy of nero not being compatible with SP2, and took it into the IT desk who said they can't help me without re-imaging my computer (formating and putting the school software, windows etc etc) so they imaged it for me and now windows update is telling me its ready to install SP2 again. is there any way i can shut it up or safely install SP2? thanks

Forget SP2, and tell M$oft to mind it's own business until they fix SP2 up properly.

You don't have to do what they say, you know Do as Trip says and turn off auto update. Control Panel-System->Auto Update.....click no or whatever.....no more Mr Micro$oft

I have had many problems in the past with SP2. Installing seems to cause nothing but problems.

However, I did find a way around it where Windows XP behaves perfectly with SP2 installed.

Make a slipstreamed SP2 CD.

Do a repair install with the slipstreamed CD.

That is how I installed SP2 after tons of aggravation.

Now I have not one single problem.

my school seems to have a vendetta against microsoft. they won't left me access the microsoft homepage or anything with assosiacted with it. they force us to use windows, then don't let us update or as a matter of fact, do anything much at all with it! are there any SP2 mirrors or anything out there? ARGH this is really annoying!

Yogi, you better watch your mouth because I just might drive down to your school !!!! LOL**

You really "think" we don't know all the places to get SP2? It's the "easiest" thing to find. Why? I'll let you find that one out

Have you considered that there may be a reason that the school prohibits/restricts downloading to and upgrading the operating systems on the computers?

My workplace still hasn't cleared SP2 for downloading and installation. Corporate still hasn't completed the necessary tests for compatibility and problems with the applications that the company uses.

You've already seen what happens when you install SP2, so why would you want to do it again?

If it mucks up again they can slurp it again. all they do is plug it into their server and slap the image onto it. they really don't mind. i would rather get SP2 running for the hols than have my computer, with nonw of the windows updates, lying vunerable when im at home. and hey, i may aswell give it a try. i might even do a fresh install and not worry about the school software. and if slipstreaming works i can tell them that it does and they can put it onto all the images. im being a self designated guinea pig
thanks for all the help about slipstreaming

I understand your feelings and have "been there"! I instructed all my personell on my shift to install SP1, when I read on MicroSofts site that patches for the viruses/trojans at that time wouldn't stick/work correctly if SP1 wasn't installed. We were the shift that wasn't infected, and a month later Corporate decided that SP1 had to be installed on all machines.

All of my home machines are running SP2 with no problems, but my work laptop still only has SP1, due to Corporate restrictions.
