Running in 'Silent' Mode

Hey, Is there anyway to run a computer with a separate OS or something within XP that will slow the proc and do something that will allow you to use only one prog like winamp? I hope to be able to turn off the fans and stuff that make noise because the comp will not need all of its proc power in this state. If not using this comp that I have now, is there any other way to do this? Cause I know laptops have the ability to turn off the fans when they dont need them.

Of course the audio card would need to be enable, but not even the video card. Anyway, Thanks

Processor: AMD Athlon XP 2100+ (1.73 GHz)
Memory: 512 MB DDR PC2700
Graphics card: nVidia GeForce Ti4600 @ 1280 x 1024, 75 Hz; 1152 x 864, 75Hz
Audio: CL Audigy Platinum
OS: Windows XP Professional SP2

You can't slow the processor like that by running another program to take up its run time. By using run time like that it's infact using more cpu power and generating more heat.

Best way to use less run time, you can disable some services and other programs. but a cpu sitting idle will still generate heat, its called idle for a reason.

I dont think the XP range has the powernow technology which laptops have that allow them to use minimal power etc when idle.

Give me some more info on what you intend to do with this machine running winamp and i'll see what i can do

I would like my comp to be able to stream winamp music from the internet (shoutcast streams) for like hours without anything else running (except the sound card of course). I do have a laptop, but it isnt that reliable, and the fan eventually turns on after about 20 mintues. Ultimately, I want a 'silent' machine. The comp I have now has a really loud CPU fan and is made of aluminum, which makes it quite loud.

I guess I could build a new machine with a slow Proc that would only need a heat sink and no fan. But thats more money.

Thanks

OR you could get one of those fanless heatsinks

The Scythe on this page for example

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...oolers_18.html

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...aster_122.html

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatal...alman_121.html

Can i ask the point of opening the case and leaving the sides off if you still have that noisy fan in there. having the sides off will increase the noise not quieten it.

Resit the cpu with some arctic silver 5 or better, and then you can have that fanless heat sink and/or a slower fan.

Anyone know what the best case sound-proofing material is? I might apply some to the insides of the case. Anyone have any experience with that stuff?

Im afraid to use a smaller/fanless heat sink with XP running, im always at 100% CPU utilization (Folding@home)
