Toshiba Satellite 2410 notebooks & SP2

I have been advised by 2 toshiba warranty techies from ( 2 different shops) that there is a configuration problem in the BIOS if you install sp2. What happens is either the notebook won't boot or it freezes. I was told to call toshiba itself and they said it was a software issue which i gather it is and they said that their BIOS is uptodate as far as they are concerned. I bought my notebook in feb 2003. According to the techies they said that any notebook that is more than 6 months old the sp2 is a major install problem and that i should not have them do the install as i was going to as they would only have to undo it.
Apparently when I talked to M$ there are a lot of notebooks in this state. they mentioned Dell and then the PC's that are generic. I have been told to sit and wait and that their researchers are working on program compatability and as well manufacturer. I don't have a problem doing this as sp1 is humming along for me and i am happy . it's just all the articles that keep saying to update.
I would appreciate comments, I hope there are some toshiba notebook owners out there with the vintage that i own or other notebook owners as i would like to hear of their experiences. Thankyou

Hello Tucker .

I am using a 5 year old Gateway laptop with sp2 installed and i have had no problems at all.

If M$ said to wait then that is what i would do. As long as you have a decent firewall and antivirus you will be fine with sp1. Infact i only installed sp2 myself so that i could advise people as to what setting does what.

When you do decide to install sp2 there are a few things you can do to make the transition less painfull.

1. Defragment your hard drive
2. Delete all your cookies and history files
3. Update all your antivirus software
4. Turn off System restore
5. Reboot in safe mode
6. Run Ad-aware and Spybot search and destroy (Updated)
7. Run antivirus and trojan scans
8. Reboot normally
9. Install sp2 and relax with a nice Beer

Your comments are most greatfully appreciated as there have been so many of my friends...with good intentions pushing me to install. I just got my cd's and thus i decided now would be the time to pull the plug, but to research it out to avoid the possible pain.
I have taken a shot of all of your suggestions for which i thankyou for taking the time to respond. i am a novice with this box in front of me and it makes my bread and butter and thus i don't want to shoot myself in the foot by reacting to peer pressure.
And indeed not all of them are satisfied with some of the little quirks that they are dealing with. I run Norton Professional systemworks, adaware se, spybot, purchased win patrol, spysweeper, and spyware blaster and a2 and intermittently run panda standalone active scan and alternate with trend micro house call. If something acts strange i sometimes run Avert Stinger. i check for updates regularly and try to be conscientious and have been since i got the box in feb, 2003.
I believe that the techies of the manufacturer should know what is best and thus i will sit and wait and just keep an eye on my security programs.
Members such as yourself help immensely with these comments especially as i said, when one is a novice!!!!
Thankyou

I just got a call from toshiba today which was a surprise as they do say that they do quality assurance checking. But it was interesting as it was in respect to the BIOS and whether I had gone ahead with the sp2 install and of course I said no. They simply indicated that they were doing followups. At the moment they still maintain that there is no issue with toshiba. Thought that I should post this for whatever it is worth for other members.
