Screen Resolution Problems in XP

I'm new to computing so forgive my ignorance.

I have Win XP Professional installed on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I tried changing the screen resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x1024 through the properties screen and all this did was expand the screen to beyond the borders of my monitor. In order to "see" what is on the screen I have to move the cursor to the left/right/top/bottom of the screen to scroll to it.

Is there any way to actually increase the resolution but keep it all viewable without scrolling?

Any help would be appreciated.

Not exactly sure what you are after with changing the resolution but go to "display" in control panel > settings > advanced > change the "dpi" setting to smaller or try a custom setting.

The reason your having this problem is probably because your laptop screen doesn't support 1280x1024.

Check the manufacturers website.

Why do you need it on 1280x1024 anyway?

Some of my database files are larger than my monitor allows which results in me having to scroll and/or move windows around to get to buttons. I'd like to view the entire file at once.

Have a look for your model on here, and check what resolution the screen supports.
