Confused,Frustrated and p*#$£d off
Windows SP2 won't install. Windows Media Player 10 won't install. Access is denied to both of them after about 75% thru installation. I renamed the catroot2 file, I've ran sfc /scannow. I've reinstalled I386. Basically, I think I've tried everything. I'm not going to have to format the drive am I?
Someone has to know the solution, I'd be forever in your debt! aarrrrrrrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhh

Did you try scanning for viruses? Some viruses can Interrupt installation of any software.

I've had a similar problem, but didn't get it solved. I bought the windows xp with sp1 when it came out.
Is xp up to date?

xp is up to date. I had to update it manually because the automatic updates don't install anymore

Hi there,
First off, I would recommend NOT installing SP2. Until MS has sorted out all of the little bugs that come with it (like there were with SP1 which was fixed to SP1a), I would stay away from SP2.
Follow the instructions here and you should be as good to go as you would be with SP2. Also note the replies regarding firewalls. At the very least turn on and use the built-in firewall, or get a freeware firewall like Sygate or Kiero.
If you truely want to install SP2 (for whatever reason), I would recommend backing up all your data, and slipstreaming SP2 onto an install CD. You can find instructions on how to do that here. For those stories I've heard about installing SP2, I've heard way less for people who have slipstreamed and clean installed.
Hope this helps.

The only good thing in SP2 is the fix in Internet Explorer. Where they replace the pop up windows every time a website ask you to install it. Also it prevent web bugs in IE (usually web bugs actively run in IE behind you rbrowser even you don't allow it).
And thats' it.

You can download Media Player 10 directly from Microsoft. No need for sp2!

"Perhaps!" Irreguardless of what you think personally, that still doesn't help solve the problem. Isn't that what the forum's all about anyway?
