\system32\hal.dll

right

the problem is

everytime i switch the computer on i get a black screen with the message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the file above.

the only thing i can do is restart which just brings up the same message.

i have the hal.dll file on a floppy disk.

i cannot get onto the part where there is the start button in the bottom left hand corner.

the only way to do anything different is to run the system recovery disk but that does f**k all.

i have no "windows xp" disk, i have microsoft disks with stuff like windows office 2001 and microsoft word 2001 but no actual "windows xp" disk.

how would i go about getting the hal.dll file to actually start running?

thanks

everything you need to know about what caused the problem and how to fix it is on the link below, may have to click a link or two on that page. but you will need a xp cd or bootdisk set.

none of that really makes any sense

would doing a destructive system recovery be an option as there is nothing on the computer that would be missed and it restores factory settings?

if you are not worried about your files, pictures, music, work, passwords.....doing a format/clean install would be a good thing if you have all your drivers and software cds.
