windows updates like SP2 can be stopped by turning off automatic updates, right click you my computer icon, or start menu link and select properties. then click the automatic updates tab, take the check out of "keep my computer up to date" and click apply at the bottom of the page. you can still go to windows updates and do a custom install of any updates you do want and skip things like sp2.
as for norton updates, those need to be downloaded. i dont like norton....but if it is what you have, atleast keep it updated.

nothing is fool proof...no one program works well for everyone...norton eats system resources, is a pain to uninstall(and have a good system left), it's updates have been known to trash windows. McAfee is a bit better, but not much. i use pc cillin on all computers i work on unless they tell me to use something else(which i try to talk them out of). F-secure is very good, AVG free edition is very good. it's like anything else though....whatever works best for you and you are happy with.
