Having some real conflicts

Hi again:

Upon booting to the desk top, I get a choice of which windows I want to bring up and both are named the same. This is probably causing me a conflict as after it reaches the desktop, I get win popup which states preparing to install and after 2 or 3 min, the HD is still grinding away and another caution or error window tells me that "This MSI must be launched through setup".

Why would I be getting this error and how can I get rid of it? Can it be that both win folders are causing me this error? Since it takes about 3 min for the desktop to quite down (which is a very long time) then once I close the warning, my computer finally stabilizes.

Can anyone help me with this, without having me to reinstall my system as I am very tired of trying to get back all my data. Most of it is backed up so it would take me more time to get all my stuff back. Thank you for all your help.

Best regards,

It's asks you to select from a list because somewhere along the line someone has tried to reinstall Windows and has ended up with a second installation or part there of. When you get to that screen choose one or the other by using the "arrow" keys and clicking "enter" afterwards. By default the system will choose one for you after 30 seconds. However it is possible that it is now choosing the wrong one. Pay attention to which one is selected at bootup (most likely the top) and on the next reboot select the other. If this works and gets you back to windows I'll advise on how to tweak this so as not to see the selection screen further.

Hey, Overclock Doc:

Thanks for the post. In reply, I do get the 2 choices upon bootup and I know the one on top is the good win xp. I'm the one who made the goof. Well. actually part of the problem is that when I upgraded my computer with new mobo, CPU, and HD, I couldn't install my original version of win xp. I had to finally bring it to one of the larger computer stores and they even told me that it couldn't be installed. It was suggested that they should install one of their win xp. When they booted up for me, it did get to the desktop but once I got it home, I couldn't boot it up. If it were my system disk, I could do a repair. Since I did not want to do another bring it back for repairs, I thought that I could at least try to install my win xp once again. I got past the setup stage but when I tried to install my OS, I was warned that I could have conflicts which will cause problems. I even tried to name the folder as new windows. I still went ahead to install and it did get to the desktop. The problem is that now I have 2 folders of win xp on the same partition and both are named win xp. I did not even see the "new" when I named it. With having two folders, conflict is caused and if you noted in my original message, I get the setup problem. What I think this is also doing is messing up my video and the familiar "program not responding". comes up more often than not.

I know I can fix the problem with a clean install and making certain that my drive is zero'ed out. I can have a clean, fresh install with only one win xp folder {like it is supposed to be} and just chalk it up to misjudgment. So, there it is. Sorry I had this become a long message. Hope to hear from you soon.

Best regards,
