memory problem

I recently copied three home videos totalling about 10g. My HDD c drive now has only 1.7mb memory left I have tried to find where the temp files have gone but to no avail. This was done three days ago using nero, the files were copied onto the HDD as I only have one fly drive (burner). How can I locate and delete these files. I can't find any file that is holding this amount of data, how can I free up my memory.
My computer is
dell 2400
512 ram
win xp

Second question.....I need to increase the memory on my computer from the research I have done it appears there are different types such as ide eide ata etc according to my print out from dell the primary controllers are ide channel (standard ide ata/atapi controllers) what type of HDD can I add to my system.

To all respondees I thank you endlessly for helping out amatuers like me who get stuck with IT problems..

Have you tried doing a search for the films and deleting them manually?

To delete your temp file type %temp% in to the run box. This will open your temp file. Select or highlight everything and delete them. You can save them in your recycle bin for a few days to make sure there are no problems (there won't be ).

Can't help with the HD question i'm afraid .

Good luck!

Try doing a search for the files using the windows search feature. It should be on the right hand side of the start menu. Click on all "files and folders"on the left side of the window when it's open. Then, type in the name of the video in the first blank box in the left side of the video. In the last box where it' says " Look in," Select the hard drive it ws installed on. Click search when you're done. Once the search finds the files, right click the name/s of the files and select delete.

Thanks for the replies, I have tried both but the files just do not seem to exist yet the memory has gone! I have checked all folders and files for anything in the size region of the three video files but can't find them anywhere. Before starting to copy them I had 11.8gb of free memory, when i'd finished it was down to 1.5mb, i have run the nero programme again and cheched where that stored the files but there was nothing there either, I,m really peeved now as my memory is so low yet the data isn't there!!!!!!
Any other suggestions would be great.

Tom, I once had that scare......and they were not real files in existence.......have you shut down/restarted and done a defrag? When I burn a DVD backup, this happens, and I have to reboot or shut down and then defrag.......if they are only "virtual files" you will see a lot of red in the defrag program.

Ok Tom, sorry that wasn't the solution for you, but I have one other suggestion.

The program you used to save the home videos to "must" have a file path where it stores the files. Ok, you may not know where this is, but what if you set up the same scenario and watch where the files are being sent. Stop the process, and then access it through explorer and delete all. They have to be in some directory.

Tom, you need a genius here, and it isn't me. But have you tried going to search and only looking for video in the menu?

I use nero and although it appears the files are present, they aren't. Short of this, unless anyone wiser comes along, try contacting Nero support.

Hey Viktoria, once again thanks, but.........still no joy, there is no file bigger than 1g and all that were listed I could account for, these files have just dissapeared. The link you sent was good though as it was exactly the same problem, I shall try Nero and see if they can help though they will probably take days to respond. Once again a massive thanks for all your efforts.

Tom, I have done a little research and have read that to fix the problem you uninstall and reinstall Nero, or whatever program you used.

That should fix it.

It's getting worse!!!
I have tried uninstall/reinstall of nero made no difference, i have now tried to free some space by deleting a folder with 3.7g of mp3 files, did a restart and the memory available hasn't changed yet the files have gone. I now think this may not be a nero problem but perhaps th os, i have doen a disk clean defrag and virus scan but nothing is brining back my memory, any suggestions?

I have an idea, how about checking the system restore and LOWERING the ammount of hdd used, restart then put it back to a sensible level , eg 1-2 gigs

this i found in some cases restores the space since system restore backs up temp files on occasion just incase, who knows how that thing really works.

when it was first released in ME. it ATE hdd's every change was backed up, they soon put an end to that. it went thru a 60 gig hdd of mine like a knife thru butter till i turned it off.

Install the program below. It will tell you exactly where your memory is being used.

http://www.east-tec.com/diskmanager/home/download.htm

Empty your recycle bin
Delete all but your most recent restore points

That's all i can find at the minuite. I will keep looking
