Dreaded blue screen of death !!

Hello all,
my first post here and unfortunatly it's
not a good one !!
A member of staff here took a laptop from work home with him and was using it over the w/e but he installed some software and allowed a windows update over the net. Since then the laptop wont boot into Win XP !! I have tried booting into safe mode as the blue screen suggests but to no joy. Also tried last good configuration but again it wont work. The text at the top of the blue screen reads "Unmountable_Boot_Volume" which makes me fear the worst. Does anyone know of any tricks to allow me to boot into safe mode so I can rid it of any updates or is the HD fried ?

Best regards,
Mitch....
