An annoying problem

I have had this problem for a while and thought I would throw it on some forums to see if anyone can help me out.

I keep getting an NTLDR not found error on bootup if I have my slave drive plugged in. The only way I can get around this problem is by inserting my Windows XP Pro CD into the drive. When it asks me to press a key to boot from the CD, I just let it time out and the computer boots normally. If I unplug the slave drive, it will also boot up normally, but, of course, I have no second drive. Since it is a 180Gb drive that is practically full, I would like to be able to use it again and get rid of the hassle of inserting my XP CD every time I reboot. I have tried to repair the NTLDR file to no avail. Same thing happens. If anyone could help me out on this one, I would be most appreciative. Thanks.

Are you sure that master/slave settings on each drive are correct? Have you went into bios and made sure of the boot order?

Yes all the settings are correct, in fact, I pulled the drive and put it in a friends computer and the same thing happened. There had to be something goofy going on with that drive.

Did you run chqdsk on it? You can download a diagnostic tool from the hard drive manufacturer to test it as well. Did you take a real close look at the ribbon connector on the drive itself for a bent or broken pin?

No I havn't looked at the drive, but I don't think that is the problem. When I have it plugged in, and I get it to boot up using the XP CD, my files are all there and the HD runs normailly. I will check when I get home tonight.

You have a little work cut for you, but I think you can solve this if you follow these instructions......

Please let us know if that helps.

That did it. Thanks a lot for the info. I had a feeling there was somehting wrong with the boot sector, but I didn't know how to reformat it on NTFS. My machine finally boots normally again. Thanks once again.

This problem is RESOLVED.
