Wireless networking 'fun'

I've been having some 'fun' getting XP Pro to work with wireless networking. I have a HP laptop which connects wirelessly to a NetGear router. Haven't had any issues in the past. Since a recent update, the wireless functionality under XP has been 'upgraded'.

My issue is that it seems that XP refuses to find a wireless network, unless it is configured to automatically connect to it. For example if I disconnect from the wireless network now, then click refresh, there is no detected wireless network! I can refresh for as long as I like - nothing is found.

A workaround I have is to re-run the wireless networking setup wizard from control panel, then reconfigure the connection. XP then sets the connection back to automatic connection type and hey presto, XP finds the wireless network!

What is going on here? Its driving me up the wall. Any assistance is appreciated.

seems like this is a wide spread problem right now has no documented fixes, there is much discussion and alot of tried solutions. i myself would use one of my handy system backups from a date when the system was working good, lock down the system from updating untill i see the problem is solved......

Thanks for that. Seems to be a problem that a lot of people are having, so I am lucky I have a workaround that will at least get me connected, even though it is not as securely as I would like.
