My computer sits at XP login screen, then freezes...
I've had a lot of pop-ups lately, so I went into my registry to see what kind of strange files may have been downloaded by viruses onto my computer. I found something called "cashback" which was obviously a program that I did not download by my own free will. A friend of mine told me to delete it, so I did, and that was all I touched in the registry. My computer froze up at that point, so I turned it off, then restarted it. Ever since then, my computer won't start up correctly. The computer starts up normally, then gets to the login screen for Windows XP. If you were to have multiple user accounts, it is at the screen where you would choose which account to log onto. My computer does have two accounts to choose from, however, now it does not show any accounts and it simply just says Windows XP (the logo). The screen just stays there, and won't go to the normal Windows screen where it has the Start Menu, Recycle Bin, etc. I can't get into my computer at all...to my documents, pictures, files, etc.
I have tried to boot up in safe mode, debugging mode, and in the mode where it says "go back to where my computer last worked" under the F8 tab when you start up. Nothing works. Control-Alt-Delete doesn't work either...
I have been reading about registry errors, and I actually dont think that is the problem...because they all say I would get an error message that would tell me what file has been corrupted or is missing. I have no idea what the issue could be, but I have a weird feeling it might be a virus that I have had for awhile now. I do have McAfee Virus Protection, but all of the popups make me believe I have some weird program installed onto my computer. I dont know why it all of a sudden did this though, it has been working fine for months.
If I re-install Windows XP, will I lose my documents/pictures/music files? What about the Windows XP Recovery Disk?
Are there any suggestions that anyone has as to how I can access my computer again...how to fix the problem...etc?
Please help me!!!!
Thank you for reading...happy holidays.
