curious - I got four USB2

I know I got four USB2s, but where in "my computer" config section (*) are those four USB2 listed as USB2 but not called USB1 ?

I should think there must be a special listing of components like USBs, graphic cards, etc.

Thanks in advance.
G

(*) panneau de configuration - my WinXP is French version

right click, MY COMPUTER. then choose the PROPERTIES. then choose the HARDWARE tab. then choose the DEVICE MANAGER. there you will find all the things you are looking for.

Not listed as specifically USB 2.0, but in the device manager, you should have a listing for USB 2.0 root hub, or USB 2.0 host controller... just depending on the way the motherboard has things set up. It is listed that way because the USB ports are not the important part, it is the root hub or host controller that makes it USB 2.0. Since the ports are "plugged in" to a USB 1.1 and 2.0 controller, if you listed both, there would be 8 listings (2 for each physical port) which would be confusing and disappointing to someone trying to locate the "other" 4 ports that are not really there.

Also, you'll probably need SP1 or higher installed for USB 2.0.

Dear 'Fly-FISH' and 'Curtsy-BOB', Thanks much for your help.

Did Ck out and thanks to you discovered "USB 2.0 Root Hub" and "VIA USB 2.0 Host Controlleur"

The reason I'm in the dark is because my PC constructed from scratch with some used and some new components by my friend who is a wine merchant. We are both in our 70s. Apart from hard disk (120 giga), AMD 1.5 giga,512 mega DDR mem, periphs CD and DVD) I am not sure (and he completely forgot) which are the pieces he used to constructed my computer, but computer fonctions fine.

Thanks again 'Fish' and 'Bob'.

Georges

Mine listed as USB only, i don't know y urs say USB1, may b yours are not USB2.
To test to see if they're USB2 or USB1, simply plug in a USB2 device and if it is USB2, then windows XP won't complain, if it is USB1, windows Xp will say "your device n run faster if connected to a USB2 port....blah blah blah".

Thank you for info, Bob. Looked up = Cape Giradeau sounds wonderful to live and work. Much local history. Why term yourself 'hillbilly'? No hills there. Fascinating internet sites where you live. Wish you lotsa luck. Thanks for USB material and help.

(1) mine "not listed as USB1" - I definitely got USB2 - no problem, but otoh wonder why each XP outlet or device can not be described separately and in detail. Exemple : my Radeon graphic card type is listed but not how much DDR its got. Why can't XP tell us all that.

(2) Your advice to plug-in a USB2 device to see what happens is excellent - if problem concernd 'my' computer, but it doesn't. However, w/o stating it, my Q was really about friend's computer. To carry my USB2 destined scanner across Paris in the metro, then install is awkward. But yours is good idea and taking there a USB2 key pendrive is practical. Thanks much for help.

This is just a theory not any truth or anything.
The way I think it is that when a manufacturer writes a driver for a graphic card, they tend to write one version that can be manipulated a little less or more which in turn makes it workable for another graphic card.
So the driver that are installed w/ your graphic card right now is probably work for more than just the card you have. So may be that's the reason it doesn't say how much memory you have b/c it could b another graphic card but use the same driver version.

Obviously your 'theory' based on practicality and convenience to manufacturer makes sense. But it would be good w/o opening a computer to have the system display amount of ddr of a graphic card.
