WinXP Repair/Reinstallation problems -- need help
Hi, I’m having some major problems and am need of some help. I use WinXP home edition.
I have 640 RAM
Run 2 hard drives, both have many gig of space left.
It all started when I tried to load my iPod (iTunes) software onto my computer. I had problems running the program (crashing my computer), and thought that it didn’t load correctly b/c I had NAV and ZoneAlarm running at the time of installation. So, I uninstalled the software, and that is where the real problems started.
At that point I could no longer boot up Windows. Normally or in safe mode, neither would work, and would hang up. It also didn’t work to “boot from last know good config”. I think that maybe when I uninstalled iTunes, etc, that some of my driver data or windows software was deleted ??? just speculation.
In safe mode bootup, the last line to show would be “\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys”.
So, not being able to boot up at all, I thought my only option was to boot from the WinXP cd disk, and do a “Repair”. I did this according to the instructions from MS website and Dell (my computer mfg).
I had a few problems with the repair process, a couple of hardware software wasn’t MS certified messages, and a couple of hang-ups that the MS website gave me fixes for.
But, now that the WinXP repair has been completed, it seems that my system is completely wrecked now.
--it takes a LONG time (10-15 mins) to boot up and hangs. I did get a message “no paging file or paging file is too small” after the first boot after the repair. I went through the process of trying to fix this, but it doesn’t seem to be working..if this is causing the slow boot time. I can shortcut the process somewhat by hitting <alt> <tab> and get to my desktop.
--I have no internet functionality now, and it seems that it has all been wiped from my settings
--All of my programs are not showing up in the “Program” menu, even thought the folders are listed on my drive.
--Anytime I try to launch any of the shortcuts on my desktop, the system tries to initialize and install Microsoft Money 2002 twice before it will open the folder or try to run whatever program I am trying to run. Note that this happens even if I try to open My Computer, or any folder.
--A lot of my applications won’t run (Win Media player, etc..)
--Even booting in Safe Mode now is a very slow process, and it still pauses right after the “\Windows\System32\DRIVERS\agp440.sys”. log line…but it will eventually un-hang and get into Safe mode.
Things are really goofed up and I don’t know what to do, or what happened in the first place. Are my only options at this point to completely wipe Windows and do a fresh install?
Are there any suggestions anyone can offer, or any additional info I can provide to maybe shed some light on my scattered descriptions above?
Thanks for any help,
Mark
