Unhappy XP repair problem

Hello everyone,

I am in big trouble with my computer.
I have a DELL Inspiron 8200 laptop with windows xp. Recently I had some problems with my computer, most probably related to some spyware I removed without enough care.
I was recommended to do a repair install of win xp. I did that by using the dell windows cd. I booted from cd and selected setup and then repair. Everything seemed to go OK, but during the repairing I get a blue screen with these messages:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: o1394b.sys"

Then there is some advise about what to do: try again, disable or remove hardware or software, disable bios options of caching and shadowing and use safe mode to fix stuff. Out of these I tried doing it again - but it gives the same error and also starting in safe mode - but I get the message that safe mode cannot be used.

Finally there is some text with technical info (some addresses list).

I would really appreciate any hep I would get from you. Even if I had to reinstall everything, I would at least like to take my data out of the hard disk in some way at least.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Adrian

One thing you can try that won't make things worse, might get you into Windows and will only take some time.

Try this one first since the problem resulted from removing spyware.

Boot to the XP CD but this time choose Repair the first time it's offered to get into the Recovery Console.

Once in the Recovery Console, at the prompt, type the following lines, pressing ENTER after you type each line:

cd system32
copy userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe
exit

If it won't boot on into Windows, the second thing to try (second because it takes longer):

Reboot with the XP CD back to the Recovery Console. Once there, type "chkdsk /r" (without the quotes), press the Enter key. It can take some time for it to run so be patient.

Once the scan is finished, type "Exit" (without the quotes), press the Enter key and see if it will boot on into Windows.

Hi Miz,

Thanks for your reply.
I have tried the things you suggested, but I still get the same message when windows reboots. The setup operation is resumed and it stops at the same point as before. I have also tried to run the repair again from the CD - still the same error.

Adrian,

Do you have Firewire device connected to your computer such as: MP3 player, Scanner, Camera, extra storage drive, CD ROM or even an add-on Firewire card ? if so, remove the firewire device and try the same step all over again , your error is related to FireWire 800TMControllers.

Good Luck

Cheers

Hi Snowmonkey,

Thanx for you reply.
There was nothing connected to the firewire.

In the end I opted for a clean install, after transferring the data out.
