Help With Windows Media Player: Don't Know How To Uninstall Or Take Off Default

Okay, I'm trying to figure out what to do. I am trying to use quicktime instead of windows media player. Windows Media Player is set on some kind of default though, because whenever I go to play a movie or music it pops up in Windows Media Player. I don't know how to take the default player off of it... So then I tried to uninstall it. I went to "Add or Remove Programs" but when I did, Windows Media Player wasn't listed! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!

go to "Set Access Programs and Defaults"....choose "use current media player"

*Open the media player you want to use before doing this*

u cannot uninstall window media player completely, but u can uninstall the new one and keep the old 1.
go to add/remove, then go to add/remove windows component, scroll down the list, then uncheck windows media player.

Click add / remove then put a tick in the show updates box then WMP 10 will show.

To set the play options open WMP the press tools then options then file types, remove ticks from anything you do not want it to play by default and press apply.

You can get the version of WMP you prefer from here

disable media player .... and others

is it not possible to disable media player in some way then?
basically, i don't want one of my machines to be able to run a number of the included windows programs, especially media player; outlook express; messenger.
i've disabled messenger but is there no way of doing similar to the other products which are so likely to be attacked?

any other thoughts about stopping teenagers who don't give a damn about trojans; pop-ups; auto-dialers; slow running; etc from using my main machine would be appreciated.

p.s.
the reason he wants to use mine and not his own, is that he's now got so many of the above problems (even with an a-v and anti-trojan running) that his machine is virtually unusable. however, he still refuses to follow any of my advice and i'm sick of continually formatting and reloading everything for him.

Not sure if this will help, log in with his name and stop it loading, though, if you stop it running he's probably going to ask you to switch it on, as he will see Media Player is still installed. Maybe you could remove the item from the start up list and stick the desktop icon in a hidden or password protected folder.

Help...!

Hey guys,

I have the biggest problem ever... Just recently I started up Windows to find out - everything I wanted to open - Windows Media Player tried to open for me. I can't even open music without going into "open with" then Windows Media Player. I can't delete the folder that contains it because it tells me the program is being used, but when I close absolutely everything -I get the same message! I can go into the folder, and delete the files individually, but after about 4 seconds they just re-appear. I am having extreme trouble because I can't even open the control panel because of Windows Media Player. I can still open the internet and games etc. but not Outlook Express or any other application. When I open a word document, for example, it tries to open it in Windows Media Player, but I can still go to "open with" then Microsoft Word to open it successfully. I'm not a genius but I'm guessing somehow it's set itself to automatically open applications with Windows Media Player...

PS I have just downloaded WMP version 10, but the one giving me the problems is version 6 I think

PLEASE HELP!!!

Oops!

Hey guys,

Me again... I just installed a few Windows Updates, restarted my computer and now WMP has got some more bad news for me. I just read a post up further from Info saying:

"Click add / remove then put a tick in the show updates box then WMP 10 will show.

To set the play options open WMP the press tools then options then file types, remove ticks from anything you do not want it to play by default and press apply."

I thought - Wow! That was so easy... But now I can't even get WMP open to do that! It just says "An internal application error has occured".

BURN WMP!

I also have that same problem right now with my WMP10. Did you found a solution to it?

To set Quicktime as your default player, open QuickTime.
Select Edit / Preferences / Quick Time Preferences.
From the pulldown. choos File Type Associations.
Click on the File Types button below..
Click the box to the right of the plus sign until it is a check-mark (not blank or dash).
Repeat until all boxes are checked.
Click on Apply, then OK.
This should set Quicktime to play everything it knows how to.

When i try to open Media player it says that "the instruction at 0x591c28e9 referenced memory at 0x595c3f78. The memory could not be read." Any clues. It's weird, when i choose to open a .wmv file this warning comes up and i can't see anything but i can hear the sound. Any clues. Could it be resolved by disabling WMP and usin a diff prog?
