freezing during right-click/new folder

For some reason I can't create a new file folder without XP freezing. This freezing also occurs whenever I right click on the desktop. If I use the End Process funtion on "drwtsn32" in the Task Manager the freezing stops.

I'm not sure what's going on but I think it may have something to do with windows recognizing my hard drive. I seem to recall a previous error message relating to problems with my hard drive upon installation of XP. Is there any way I can fix this?

If you have automatic updates set on then yes I might, depends on the setting, i say service pack 2 because there are known errors with shell extentions and sp2 that cause freeze/crash problems and drwatson to engage.

Is there a way to check if SP2 is installed? And if it's on my computer, how can I get it off?

Quick test to see if you have service pack 2 installed is when the machine boots up and you have the Win XP boot logo, it will just say Windows XP, it will not say if it is home or professional

for a thorough check open upa run box , hit the windows key + R then type WINVER, it will tell u if you have SP2 installed or not.

other than that "control panel" -> "system"

I would reccomend turning off the DEP that sp2 installs for the moment, untill they release an unpdate, the DEP causes so many problems. follow bellow...

My Computer -> properties -> advanced -> startup and recovery ->

hits the edit button and change the line from

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

to

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=AlwaysOff

eg change optin to alwaysoff

hope this helps

Partition?

Thanks for the help Xanex. I've made the recommended changes. I also noticed that the line had "partition(1)" in the string. My hard drive is partitioned into three smaller drives, should I change this portion of the string to "partition(3)"?

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=AlwaysOff

to

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="Micro soft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=AlwaysOff

You see the line

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S

what ever number is in the ( ) there ^^^ should be the number you use
