Question Floppy A: Drive Doesn't Appear in 'My Computer'

I'm totally perplexed by this one, if anyone can help that would be great.

Basically, the Floppy Disk A: doesn't appear in the 'My Computer' folder. The Floppy Disk Drive and Controller are installed and working properly according to System Device Manager. I've followed the support guide for Win XP on Microsoft's web site with no joy, as the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters commands don't appear under the registry key.

However, I can still access the A: when I go to Start, Run, and key in 'A:' So the drive is there and I can access files off a floppy disk but I cannot save or copy files to a floppy disk, as it doesn't appear in any program I use to Save files (i.e. Word, Excel etc.)

One other thing I notice is every time the computer loads Windows, the Floppy Disk tries to work/find a disk in the drive a couple of times, but no error message appears.

If anyone has any ideas that can help me I would most appreciate it. Thanks!

Welcome to this forum with your first post.

I have experienced that personally and it was driving me nuts ...however, this problem had a very easy solution for me, may be you should try that too..... BIOS in New computer don't have the floppy drive installed (You think it can't be that simple, right ?) yes, go to BIOS and enable the floppy drive and boot your system.

Let us know if that works for you

Cheers

Yes I'm sure that every setting in BIOS that concerns floppy disk is enabled. The strange thing is this isn't a new computer. I've recently changed installed a DVDRW to replace a CDRW on secondary primary IDE, I cannot see how that affects the floppy disk though.

Remove the controller

Try to uninstall the controller for the floppy drive from device manager. After it's uninstalled click on your computers name at the very top, should be the first thing in device manager, and then click on the scan for hardware changes button. Let Windows reinstall the controller and it should make all the needed repairs.

This fixed my cdrw when I had a similar problem.

Thanks for the tip. I tried that one, but with the same result. A: still doesn't appear in My Computer. I can access it within a program but not in My Computer or Explorer, which means I cannot manage my files. Any other ideas???

Thanks!

Bios setting to try

Go into you bios and look for any setting that says report no fdd to windows. This can cause this error sometimes too. Windows XP normally scans the bus, not the bios so this may not work.

Went into my bios, nothing mention no fdd for windows, but I checked all the other fdd related settings and enabled them, so there shouldn't be any problems concerning the bios.

Thanks again for the info. Sadly no nearer a solution!

Have you found an answer yet. I have the same problem (also with Flash Drives) I can't see it in My Computer or Windows Explorer but can go to Run and enter the drive and can see it there. Please let me know

I found the cure myself. Download Tweakui from http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx

Simply turn on all the drive letters, In Tweak UI under My Computer - Drives.
