Unhappy XP clean install

I recently did a clean install of Windows XP (home edition) on my laptop Inspiron 600m (Dell). Reason was my brother gave me this laptop. He had so much junk on it...I just decided to get rid of it and only install the stuff I need.

Here's my problem:

1. Whenever I press the power button it asks me what OS I want to load...If I choose the first option Windows XP home edition it loads the one I just installed. If I load the 2nd Windows XP home edition it says the OS is not on the hard drive/disk (something like that....I don't remember the exact wording). Is there a way to correct this to where it will automatically load the Windows XP home edition that I just installed?

2. Before I did the clean install I used to be able to burn dvd's using clone dvd in 15-20 minutes, now it takes 60-90 minutes! Is there a way to correct this? How can I get my speed back?

Thanks for all your help and suggestions

Feel free to e-mail me at mr.mani.manito@gmail.com

I had this a couple of year ago!
I found this somewhere on the net which fixed everything and now when I do a clean install its ok every time.

First did you put your xp cd in while the comp was on? Dont!

go into the bios and change your comp to boot from the cd first and the hard drive second.
put the xp cd in the drive and then reboot.
Press any key to boot from cd.
Delete your c drive and confirm delete.
now install xp on the unpartitioned space.

This will ensure that you only have 1 operating system to boot from.

Faster and easier fix

You could just do the following to save some time.

1. Right click on my computer and go to properties
2. Click on the advanced tab
3. Under the startup and recovery area click the settings button.
4. Where it says default operating system select the one you want.
5. Uncheck the first box "Time to display list of operating systems"
6. Click ok on all of the windows and then reboot. See if that worked.

If this didn't work let me know and i'll tell you how to rebuild the boot config from the xp recovery console.
