Selecting "file" in Windows Explorer Closes the window

I upgraded from ME to XP and ever since I’ve been unable to select "File" at the top of Windows Explorer…You know…to create a new folder and such. Even if I use the shortcut key "Alt+f" the same problem occurs...the Windows Explorer window CLOSES! Not minimizes...but closes! I’ve spent hours searching for answers online but...nothing.

I also cannot click the "Create New Folder" icon that appears in the little sub-window when you click Open or Save As in programs or when downloading something! If I do click the icon not only does the sub-window close but it shuts down the program that was associated with it!! I was trying to download a file that I had sent myself via my Yahoo email account and had forgotten about this issue and clicked the “Create New File” icon; my Internet Explorer window closed along with the download window!! Grrrr I had to re-open Internet Explorer…Go back to Yahoo Mail…Re-sign-in….ahhhhhh!!

I have full Admin rights and I'm the only user on this machine.

The other weird thing is that I have the same type of problem when I right-click my desktop! To be honest I can't remember if nothing occurs when I right-click the desktop or if it crashes. The computer I am referring to is my work PC and I’m at home.

I’ve installed all updates for Windows.

If someone has some insight on this issue I would truly appreciate some help! I’m getting a headache over this issue!

Oh, and yes I’ve tried re-installing Windows XP and repairing XP also....doesn't change anything.

Thank you for your time.

My best recommendation... back up all your data and then format your hard drive and re-install Windows (a clean install).

Upgrade installs are nothing but horrible IMO. They save all your data, but they end up screwing up the system in so many ways, especially when going from one kernel to the next (WinME was based on the NT4 kernel, while XP is based on the NT5 kernel).

Unable to select "File" or right click desktop

I did it I finally fixed the problem!! And without redoing the computer!! Yippieeee!

Ok here it goes...I simply updated my video card driver!

Nvidia Riva-TNT2 Model 64(?)...doing this from memory...Anyway by updating that driver it made my problem disappear!

I beleive it has something to do with their special menu add-ins thing...you know what I mean...but really who cares since it resolved my nightmare!

Thanks, I hope this helps someone out there...I would hate to see anyone else spend the hours I did trying to fix this problem.
