Unhappy Disabled Video Driver in XP, need to restore.

Hi everyone,

I was having trouble with my video card (evil kyro 64mb), so I first tried uninstalling the driver, but since that didn't solve my problem I disabled it, thinking xp would recognize it and allow me to reinstall the driver again. Unfortunately once xp loads i cant get any image on my monitor. I can hear the computer has booted up, and that it is running but I can't get an image. I tried removing the card, and booting and then re-installing the card to see if that would help and it still won't work. I can't even get an image in safe mode. PLEASE help me out with this as it is driving me crazy! MANY MANY THANKS!

Can you try this (no Guarantee if it works).... just before you computer starts to boot up (right after POST) keep clicking on "F8" till your computer goes to DOS mode and give you bunch of Options.... try "Boot From Last Good Known Setting" that may allow you to get into your desktop.

Cheers

if you need the driver for XP, I have a copy from Powercolor. Let me know.
I also have drivers saved for other OS's.

Simple explination & Fix

First off let me begin by saying I build and repair computers for a living so this is good advide comming from a valid source. Let me explain what started it all to shed some light on things. The Evil Kyro 64mb card was made cheaper than most due to the fact they did not research or make drivers that were ever glitch free. Every driver you find for this card will have a glitch some where. I have found only one out of the hundreds that does decent but it will not work correctly In 1024x768 mode. all others work excellent. I will repost later as to where to find that driver. Your current problem is that you have told windows to ignore that video card itself. So as soon as windows takes over it cuts your card out of the picture. Does your bios screen still show on initial 5-15 seconds of boot? If so this could be of use. If the mother board has onboard video you will need to use it to fix this problem.. If it does not you will need a different card. I assume youre using the agp slot seeing as the was no pci version of this card made. So you will need a pci card. If you dont have one you cand find them really cheap under 15 bucks. you wont need anything fancy as this is just to fix a problem. Stick it in let window install it. Go back to where you disabled video, re-enable it put your other card in and your good to go. Same if you have onboard video, you just wont need to use another card. If you cannot do any of the above theres always the format and reinstall window option. If youve got files you want to keep slave the drive and transffer them to a working computer first..I hope this is of some help......... Courtesy Of TONY M. CO of Top Flight Computers.

Firstly I am glad to see that I am not the only person to commit this insane act.
My circumstance is as follows. Purchased new graphics card for AGP slot, which was not recognised by windows. The Installation guide advised that all video drivers needed to be uninstalled or disabled for windows to identify the new card. So I uninstalled and disabled everything relating to the onboard video. All this got me was a blank screen following the XP loading screen.
In trying to re-enable the video setting, I enetered BIOS and noticed that the AGP settings were disabled ( so obviously it was never going to see the new card). I enabled the AGP settings and the PC recognises the new card (identifying it at boot up). But the PC still goes blank after the XP load screen.
I have : removed the new card, changed BIOS settings, gone to "Boot from last good known setting".
Has anyone got any other ideas??

Thanks

Hello. Unfortunately, I made the same big mistake and accidentally disabled the drivers for my video card. I have an onboard video card I think. I also have the same problem with just getting a black screen after the "windows xp" logo when booting. I admit I'm not much of a computer genius by any stretch of the imagination. So, if anyone could give me the "Computers for Dummies" version on how to correct this problem, I'd GREATLY appreciate it! Someone had mentioned to me before that i might be able to correct it in the "bias", but I have no idea what that is and how I get to it.....especially with a black screen. I'm really in a bind here and would really appreciate any help! Thanks!

Well, perhaps "accidentally" isn't the correct word. In the advnaced menu of the video settings, it showed that I had two video card options(?), so I disabled the one that was currently being used, which autimatically switched it to the other option after restart. That didn't correct the resolution problem I was having, so I disabled that driver as well, (since re-enabling the original option wasn't an option in that menu), thinking that windows would autimatically switch it back to the one it was using originally. WRONG. It didn't, and thus my problem.

I removed the panel from the side of the tower, and it appears that the video card is onboard with the motherboard. I have no manual for the motherboard. The PC is about a 4 year old Compaq running Windows XP and is plug and play. I know that it's either the AGP or PCI slot, this much I got from another source, but not sure which one it is. As I said, I don't proclaim to be a computer wizard, so AGP and PCI might as well be greek to me.

And to the contrary.....I AM indeed in quite a bind! Obviously, I'm not posting from the computer I'm speaking of. I'm doing all of this from my work computer. Would be kinda tricky getting online and navigating websites with no video, wouldn't it?

In any case, if you know of any ways of dealing with this I'd greatly appreciate some insight. I read on another site this morning where a guy with the same mistake ran his startup disc, held down the escape key until a "boot order window" appreared, where he then chose to load the cd-rom drive first, where he was able to perform a "soft system restore", which re-enabled the appropriate drivers. And chance this will work for me? I'll be at work for the next 12 hours or so, so I won't be able to try it for awhile.

Anyway.....thanks in advance for any info you may have.
