Cannot find DLL's
Just got a new laptop running WinXP home ed; v. 5.1.2600.
Have set up ALMOST all my old apps with only minor pain.
A program which was developed for my company for Win 95 by a long-gone consultant will not run. When doing the install the first time, there was a message to insert the XP disk to overwrite some system files. I mis-understood and said no. The install finished normally, but now the program cannot find it's DLL's. (They are in C:\Windows\System right where the install log says it put them) The message to insert the XP disk never re-appeared, and un-installing and re-installing the program doesn't help. Apparently, that was my one and only chance to install it right.
A peer, with a new computer just like mine, made the other choice and his old program works just fine. That old program has run on every version of win since 95, and is really needed--I am close to wiping the disk and starting over, but man that is painful. And may not work.
I have relocated the DLLs into the same directory as the exe and re-installed til I'm wore out.
Anyone know if this is a registry problem or something else? I have tried to compare the way some other old 16 bit programs are set up, but don't really know what I'm looking for.
Any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Chuck
