Problems with Serial Camera Software and XP

Back in 6/01, I puchased an Olympus D-360L camera that worked great. Now my new Compac Pent IV computer w/Windows XP will not allow me to download pictures from the cameras Smart Card into the cameras software called CAMEDIA for it automaticly goes into the Windows XP "My Pictures" this is useless for it doesn't provide the photo reworking capability I need. I was told the problem is that XP does not recognize the Serial Camera and a Card Reader would solve this download problem however I feel the Camedia software will never function correctly with Windows XP because it does not open up from the files as my old computer did when I want to send pictures. I don't know why the Smart Card pictures can't be downloaded to the Camedia camera software or any picture software package if I were to simply purchase new picture software. Looks like I am being forced to buy a new digital camera to operate with the new computer and learn another whole new skill/learning curve.
