Windows XP startup

I have encountered a problem with the startup of my XP PC
When I boot up my PC I get through the log in screen, but my desktop never loads up. I get my background picture, but no icons or programs load up. After a couple of seconds my registry editor pops up. The registry editor seems to be the only thing that loads up on my PC.
I can access all of my programs through task manager, by creating a new task. But that is the only way i am able to do anything on my PC. Any suggestions?
Thanks
~jason

My Sony Vaio Desk Top Computer

My computer had been working great although lately it had gotten pretty slow to boot up. I had not used it for a couple of weeks and when I went to turn it on the other day it didn't come all the way up. It came up to my desktop wallpaper and went no further. None of my icons appear on the desk top it just sits there doing seemingly nothing. Can anybody of you computer guys or girls tell me what may be happening?

My sony vaio is doing the same thing. I can not get to my desktop from the log on screen. How can I fix this?

Sony Vaio and "Missing Operating System" Solution

Hi. I just had a problem with my Sony Vaio Laptop purchased within the past 2 years and hardly used. I turned it on after using it for a few minutes the night before and within 5 minutes of it being turned on the screen went blue or black and had a message that let me know that it Windows was shutting down to avoid further damage to me computer. WHAT!?! When I turned it on again, it wouldn't go past the Sony Vaio page and would just have a black screen with "Missing Operating System" on the top left corner. The Vaio hadn't come with any backup or recovery CD's. Spoke with computer gurus & finally sent my laptop off with one who said the C drive was completely gone, but he would set up my D drive for me. He worked on that for a while and there was a tiny (6MB? or something like that) drive he mentioned to me that he couldn't get in to or figure out how to. Today, he called and said it was the "recovery" drive! HURRAY! The way to activate it is to push F10. It is now redoing my missing C drive that was there all along. Apparently, Sony has also not been upgrading any of the software, etc. even though I had registered my laptop. Hope this helps any of you with this problem.

Help Help Help,
I have an essay on my computer that my flatmate wrote and it is due 2mra with no back ups. We have just set up the internet in our flat and now my computer will not let me in! I start it up and instea of the usual login screen you get with xp, it comes up with a basic one. The username has changed from my name to Owner and when i enter my password it startsup then immediately plays the shutdown sound and logs out again. I want to restore my computer back to before we had the internet on it. But I cannot work out how to do it without being able to get to the start bar. HELP HELP HELP HELP please.

The very same thing happens to my SonY Vaio desktop. Where you log in and you can do nothing. It happened right after I updated (or tried to) to SP3. Maybe this is a trend...
