As far as I know, user rights policies applies to WinXP Home as well, you just don't have a builtin GUI tool to see/change them.

You should be able to set/remove those privileges with the Windows 2003 resource kit command line tool ntrights.exe.

Ntrights.exe is in the free Win2k3 resource kit:

Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=4544
or
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en
The kit will install on WinXP or later.

After installation, click on: Start, All Programs, Windows Resource Kit Tools, Command Shell

Then enter the following commands. (Attention: they are case sensitive.)

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

The first command enables network access for Guest, the two subsequent ones change two different policies to allow network access for Guest.

This has been confirmed to work by several users.

Hi, I tried the above procedure and it was unsuccessful. The problem is I can't access any of the shared resources on my winxp home machine.
Every other aspect of the networking appears to work fine. I can access the internet via a router connected to a DSL line, I can print to a network printer, access shares on other computers, but not the other way around.

Any other ideas?

I checked permissions with the showpriv command for both SeNetworkLogonRight and for SeDenyNetworkLogonRight - the first list all the user accounts on the machine (even .NET ASPNET account), and the second one returns "0 account(s) with the SeDenyNetworkLogonRight user right".

I am having the same problem on all (i have 3) notebooks that all have winxp home edition installed.

I would really appreciate any ideas,
respectfully,
pancho

I tried all the above but didn't work. What happened is I have a windows server 2003 connected to about 12 other pcs all running windows XP pro and home through a workgroup. Everything was going well untill I tried to switch windows 2003 to domain. That didn't work, so I tried to go back and join the old work group. Now, I can see the windows 2003 server on the other windows XP PCs but can't access it. Please help. I am about to go crazy.

Same here. I've tried it all. The internet works fine on both computers. A accesses files B but B cannot access files on A. B does see A, but ....the error message. My hopes falsely rise with each suggestion that I find, only to be crushed with inevitable failure. This is painful.

Ran the Tool, new error

Having same issue on 2-computer home network, XP Pro machine can't access files on XP HE, which is the main file store and is also connected to the internet. Connection is via direct crossover cable. Internet access is fine, but after running the Windows Resource Kit Tool commands successfully:

net user guest /active:yes
ntrights +r SeNetworkLogonRight -u Guest
ntrights -r SeDenyNetworkLogonRight -u Guest

,and rebooting, I get a new error msg: "\\computer2 is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
Access is denied"

Unhappy Asking for password???

My issue is much the rest....2 XP units (A is Desktop, XP Home. B is Notebook, XP Media Center).
Unit B could see Unit A as a Workgroup Computer and access all shared folders on Unit A.
Unit A could only see Unit B as a Workgroup Computer but couldn't access files.
Network is Wireless on both machines (Linksys)
No issues connecting to Internet on both machines

Initially, I tried to rectify this by changing computer names on both Machines. No Luck.

I tried the Resource Kit Tool procedure and restarted both machines. Now when I try to access the Workgroup Computer A from B, it's asking for a password with the User Name\ Guest "Grayed out". I have the same issue on the other machine. I never had passwords for either machine so this came as a surprise.

I did a system restore on both machines which alerted me that the original Computer Names would be restored and I agreed, but still get the Password Window when trying to access a Workgroup Computer.

I don't have much more hair to pull out.
Any and All Help would be appreciated.

Solution!!

I believe I have your answer WITHOUT compromising security by enabling guest account privileges and granting EVERYONE rights.

Simply this:

change your local security policy to accept regular authentication from the network and not force guest authentication...

I believe most people here having this problem have the guest account turned off, yet their local security policy is not allowing them to share unless to a guest!!

This solution is only proven on XP pro. I cannot vouch for it for the home version.

****Open the start menu-->Run--> type secpol.msc and press enter -->
local policies--> security options--> Network Access: Sharing and security model for local accounts-->

Change this option from "Guest Only" to "Classic: Local users authenticate as themselves"
------------------------------------
Ensuring that you log in with a user name and password that exists as a local user on this machine (as described in an earlier post on this thread) will give you access.

This also solves the problem of not being able to access the root / hidden / default / administrator shares (lots of names for the same things). If you aren't familiar with what these are, they are the shares windows has for the root of every drive that is configured (administrator access only) on every XP box. They do not show up by default, you have to know the name to get to them.

For instance, to access the C: drive without ever "sharing" the C: drive, simply type \\hostname or ip\c$
The dollar sign indicates this is a hidden share. If you have admin access to the machine, you will see the C: drive contents!

Curious what other hidden shares are on your computer? open computer management in administrative tools (or right click my computer and choose manage), click on shared folders-->shares. All your shares will be listed; hidden shares will have a $ at the end.

Hope this is helpful.

Smile One computer on local network shares only one of many shared files.

I have four computers (call them C1, C2, C3 and C4) hooked up together via a Westel router. C1 and C2 are Win XP pro, C3 is Win 98 and C4 is Win XP home. All have the same workgroup. I’ve right-click ‘shared folder on the network’ for a dozen or so folders on each computer. Using network neighborhood, I can see all the folders that I’ve shared. From C1, I can read all of the files and folders I’ve shared on C2, C3 and C4 . However, from C2, C3 and C4, I can get access to only one of the many shared folders on C1, ‘my documents’. (note that I have two administrator users on C1 and ‘my documents’ of both are shared, but only one of them actually shares.) When I click all other nominally shared folder, I get a message like: “<such and such> document is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. Access is denied.”
Further details:
All names are correct and all permissions are given. I’ve tried with and without Simple File Sharing" Enabled. Firewalls should be no problem since one of the folders on C1 is sharable.
I am using zone alarm. I’ve disabled it, and that didn’t make a difference.
I’ve runNTrights.exe is in the free Win2k3 resource kit, and that didn’t make a difference..
Can anyone suggest what’s wrong with computer C1?
