I have been getting tons of proprietary PCs in with all kinds of odd problems with MS updates and SP2...being I was in my usualy hurry and didnt have alot of time I just backup the files and reinstall, blocked SP2 and send them back....well I have been digging deeper and found the problem is with outdated drivers and software bundled with the PCs. Assuming you have a Bought computer like a Dell, HP, Compaq, Sony................go to the web site of the mfg and look up your model, grab any updated drivers they have, and also software patches...this is working miracles. If you have a laptop is very important to do this because they have third party controllers for many things that need to be updated.
If you have a custom PC you will need to look up your hardware vendors sites for new versions. This actually does apply to you because with DX9 and SP2 alot of video cards still look like they are working correctly but if you do a dxdiag you will find alot of your video options are disabled.
