Computer will not restore

I have windows xp Professional and the problem i'm having is that when i go to restore my pc it goes through the steps but when my pc re-boots a page is displayed saying restore incomplete. I run avg, stinger and microsoft's new anti-spyware and no viruses show up. Some people say it's a virus that is causing this. I don't know what to do. Can someone please help me. If you have a HP or other brand name pc you need to check the site for updates, I know they are releasing patches for system restore among many other things like drivers, all of which are needed to make the newer MS updates, not just sp2 work correctly.
