XP system freezes and locks up
I am running XP pro edition, with SP1 (not SP2 due to the obvious problems with it).
I upgraded from '98 about 6 months ago. Initially, there was no difficulties or problems with the system, but after playing about with it a bit, I decided to do a clean install a few weeks to clean it up.
Ever since I did the clean install, the entire system has started freezing on me. It usually happens when I am running any of the office 2003 packages- especially word but it has also happened while online using firefox, or outlook (Yes I've tried detect and repair for office, and installing the updates- didn't work). My AV and adaware don't find anything either.
The entire system just hangs, and the screen freezes on what it was doing b4. I dont even get the b.s.o.d. telling me an error has occurred, and there is never an entry in the system logs. The only way to recover it is to reset the machine and wait while scandisk runs (a mighty pain in the butt!). This is happening with frighteningly regularly now, usually within the first 15 mins of opening the packages.
I have tried freeing up all of the memory i can by defragging my RAM, and cleaning my registry, but really don't want to go through the hassle of another fresh install.
also- Occasionally, after the restart, the CMOS won't recognise my primary (slave) ATAPI CDRW, and says it is not ATAPI compatible, and cannot be recognised in the CMOS setup. I tried to reconnect my old matsui Cd drive and reboot to get the CMOS to recognise the drive, then replace it back to the CDRW and reboot again which worked, but I've never heard of the problem b4.
Any assistance or direction to where to look for solution would be gratefully received. Much thanks in advance
