Can't run system applet in the Control Panel.

Hi,

First to say, the system properties applet behaves as though I am not an admin. It shows a spinning ball and then nothing happens, ie does not run.
But when I "run as: administrator" it runs fine. How can this be, since my account belongs to the administrator group and I have checked all the permissions fine?
What could be causing this?

And another thing, I used tweakUI to make administrator appear on the logon screen. But the system applet would not run either when logged on as an "administrator" even though it did when I chose "run as" in my own account. I then deleted some files in the documents and settings folder (administrator) and at least regained the ability to run the control panel/system through the "run as" command.

Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Michek,

It does sound like you have been messing around and possibly corrupted the windows registry.

Anyhow try pressing your windows key and Pause/Break key to get in to system properties, another way is to right click my computer on the desktop and navigate to properties.

Creating a new user with all admin privileges and logging in using the new user as default may also be another way around your problem.

Yeah, the system applet just would not load. It is there, not corrupt but just would not run even if I create a new user with admin previliges.
But run as: administrator works.

what name brand is your pc, and what model number?
There are many patches for computers with proprietary software bundles that are having problems after ms updates are installed so it would be nice to know which ones to offer you.
I had a Dell 4600 here the other day with the same problem...it had 116 viruses, and 36 running spyware apps, with cookies and all 1276 objects removed, repairing it didnt seem to help...but the patches provided by Dell fixed the issue.

If scanning for and removing viruses and spyware doesn't solve the problem, create a new account with administrator privileges. Boot into it. If things run right in the new account, the most likely cause of problems is the old user account is corrupt.

If that's the case, follow the instructions in the Microsoft Knowledge Base article, How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile. Once you have the new profile a clone of the old, delete the old corrupt profile.
