install/startup problems

arrghh! last night i was trying to install XP Pro on my PC and during the install i was told that 'setup cannot copy the file dw_ex'.
After trying to find this file and having no luck I just let the install continue w/o that file. After the installation completes and my machine reboots, the PC hangs after I enter my admin passwd and my speakers make a coninuous chirping sound. I've tried the XP repair option, but I can't find anything called dw_ex that I might be able to disable upon startup. Has anyone else fixed this problem before?

thanx for the link, but even though Windows said it had repaired itself, it still hangs on startup. Strange thing is that I took the XP CD to a friend's laptop and it worked fine, so I'm gonna try getting in thru safe mode, or maybe a BIOs upgrade, but after that, I dunno.

Activate Doctor Watson in run comm. type msinfo32 go to tools
seee if this might find the problem.

or try to reinstall without printer scanners ect.... connected.
