Windows keeps logging me off and on.

Hey,

Yesterday, I restarted my computer one time. when it restarted, the log in screen appeared, and i clicked my name, and i could see my wallpaper, but it went right back to the log in screen.

i think i know the problem, because i can go into safe mode with it, but i cannot go in normal mode. it may be that my xp activation time has expired, which means i have to restart all over again.

Any help?

Thats the thing, I cannot get on the internet, at all. It keeps logging me off a couple seconds after I see my wallpaper. (No icons appear).

Can you log in in Safe Mode with Networking? If you can then download a removal tool and run it.

If not, find another computer and then download the removal tool onto a floppy/USB key and run it on the other computer. Also, when you have been able to get back to your normal desktop, go to Windows Update and apply all updates. MS has released a "Malicious software removal tool" for XP. It will help remove all traces of Sasser, Blaster, and some other big worms/viruses.

Also, get yourself a good quality AV program. Have a look at the "Windows XP Solutions - An Outline" thread at the very top of this forum and follow the instructions.

No, I cannot use Safe Mode with Networking.

If I can fix this today, should I update to SP2, as well?

Have a look at Unable to Log On To Windows XP After Removing wsaupdater.exe and Resources for troubleshooting startup problems in Windows XP.

What's a good removal tool for me to use? I used one from Download.com, but it said "No infection detected", or something like that.

I would use a removal tool from an anti-virus program company (like Symantec). I don't really trust a no-name virus removal tool... it just gives me the heebee-jeebies...

As for SP2, I don't think that you should update if your computer is running normally. If you're not having any problems, leave it alone and just apply the rest of the updates manually from the Windows Update site.

I've been running SP1 for the past year, and all has been just fine for me.

I got one from Symantec, and I ran it, and it did not find anything.

Looks like I cannot fix this. Thanks for all the attempts, guys.
