virus, spyware, or software problems?

I have Windows XP and am using SBC Yahoo Dial and lately anytime something pops up in a new window (a pop up or me opening something in a new window) my internet stops responding. I've tried reinstalling my internet but that doesn't help. I was hoping somebody here knows what the problem is so i can go back to using my computer. thanks

p.s. any recommendations on good anti-virus and anti-spyware programs i should buy?

You don't have to buy anything, try the free ones:

AVG 7 Free:

I don't know about your connectivity problem as I don't Yahoo anything but run these programmes and see what results you get.

I've tried the Spybot program and everytime I download the program it doesn't work. I think it says a file is missing.
