Tons of WinXP Pro errors

Okay, I just finished installing/updating WinXP Pro from a clean install for the second time. I am upgrading from Windows 98. I am having tons and tons of problems getting my hardware to work. I will describe some of the problems:

- No sound whatsoever. I have an SB Live! X-Gamer, which appears to be supported by Win XP. It is listed on my device manager and it says it installed the drivers, and that it is working. If I remove it, it auto detects it again so it is obviously there. The only problem here is that when I download the SB Live drivers off the SB website, it goes into the Installshield and comes back with an error saying "Setup will now exit, as you do not have any Soundblaster cards on your system.". This is probably my biggest problem as of right now.

- Problem for playing all types of media (video/audio), it will play for 4-5 seconds before freezing up for about 5 seconds (while the slider continues forward anyways) and then skipping ahead to where it should catch up to. And though there is no audio actually playing, I can tell that it is freezing up simply by watching the Equalizer on WinAMP. I have run through all troubleshooters within Windows *and* various help files I've come across on the internet, plus updated everything (Media Player, XP Drivers, etc.) with no success. For the record, I am running a Voodoo 3 AGP card.

A couple of things I have attempted: Downloading non-signed drivers from kXaudio and voodoofiles.com, neither were successful in solving any of my problems to any extent. Oh, and one more thing to be mentioned is that all of this hardware, which has remained untouched since then, was working perfectly under Windows 98 prior to the installation of Win XP.

So, as you can most likely tell I'm just running out of options as to what the problem might be. I was told that the Windows Setup might have been corrupted, so try a fresh install again, and I've got the same problems.

ARGH!!

Thanks in advance for any help,
Seveian

Soundblaster drivers have given me hell since I tried installing them in my old compaq. I stuck with the windows version of soundblasters driver, because at the time there were no plans for soundblaster to keep their drivers certified and signed. that could have changed by now though.
you sound pretty experienced, but just to make sure, you have checked for and disabled the onboard sound, right? And, make sure to disable it in the BIOS setup just to make sure. If there is no setting in the BIOS, there is usually a jumper on the motherboard unless, of course, you don't have any onboard sound at all. Also, in my experience, using unsigned drivers usually is okay, but just one that is bad could cause all kinds of trouble, especially when it is a video or soundcard driver.
