xp pro missing elements problem on laptop
Hi,
I've recently acquired a Fujitsu Siemens C1020 Lifebook laptop, with a fresh install of WinXP (I have the setup CD also).
Just a couple of days into using it, during bootup, Windows ran it's 'Checking the integrity of your drive...' thing, which found some errors on the disk in maybe a dozen or so files. They appeared to be system files (not much else was on the HD at that stage) - but there was no time to note the exact filenames, and I cannot seem to find out where Windows may have logged this check to (a text file somewhere - who knows?).
Anyway, this has left the windows installation with a few problems since:
- First time the system booted after the 'bogus disk check', I couldn't log on to windows, using any of the user accounts. It would log on then log out again straight away. After some online investigation, I found a number of references to USERINIT.EXE. Using the setup CD Recovery Console, I found that this file was now missing from my \system32\ folder. So, I re-copied it from the setup CD and hey presto, I could log in.
- Next up, I didn't have any networking. So, I tried to go into my network settings, and I then got messages from Windows to say some DLLs were missing. In fact I had to re-copy a few DDLs from the setup CD. They included TAPI32.DLL, RASAPI32.DLL and RASMAN.DLL. Once this was done, network worked fine again.
- The next problem occured when Windows Update was downloading some updates (about 30, after I declined the offer to download SP2). Whenever the update being installed was 'Security update for Windows XP' of some kind, I got a series of similar messages saying something along the lines of "Cannot find installer for [whatever]. Please contact vendor". The various [whatever]'s included (ones I recall): Mouse, Keyboard, Volume, System, hdc. Furthermore, when I later stuck a Microsoft Basic Optical Mouse into the USB port, I got the same error message again "Cannot find installer for Mouse. Please contact vendor", and the mouse didn't install successfully. Is the a case of a particular missing DLL or other file?
- And finally, many of the power-related features have started acting up - to my knowledge the following things have changed since the afforementioned 'bogus disk check':
* There used to be a battery meter icon in the System Tray, which changed to an AC power indicator when I plugged the adapter in. This no longer appears, even when switch between power adapter and battery.
* When I click on 'Power Options' in Control Panel, nothing happens. The cursor changes to mouse+hourglass for a split second, but no dialog appears.
* The computer now goes into stand-by after a wait of maybe 20 minutes, even if the screen is open - I don't recall this happening beforehand.
* It now doesn't power-off after shutdown. I get the 'it is now safe to turn off your computer' screen, which didn't happen before.
Any help/advice on these things would be appreciated. e.g. what files may still be missing, etc etc. Obviously a last resort is to re-install from scratch. Wouldn't be the end of the world, as the machine is only a few days past a fresh install by the previous owner, but I'd prefer not to have the hassle.
Thanks
Jon
