[quote=Joe Beets]I’m hoping bookworm (or any other knowledgeable sound goddess or god) may be able to help me. Our computer was sent out for repairs because of a virus problem. When we got it back, the virus problem had been eliminated, but many peripherals now showed operating problems under Device Manager – including devices for sound. (This may have been from the virus and I didn’t notice it until we got the computer back.) We uninstalled and reinstalled all affected devices. According to Device Manager, all is operating properly now, but there is no sound. In Device Manager, under Properties, Device status says “This device is working properly” and Device usage says “Use this device (enable)” for all peripherals, including sound. However, Sound and Audio Devices in Control Panel shows no sound devices. The Belarc Advisor information for the computer is shown below.

I appreciate any assistance you can provide to get the sound working again. Thanks for your help.

Get Belarc, copy and paste the report, omit the Software section, it gives Product Codes for your OS and the Windows Critical Updates.

[i]Go here to Dell http://support.euro.dell.com/support...atid=&im pid=

install the Chipset - Intel Driver - then restart your comp
then install the audio again.

[i]Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

Thanks for the help. followed instructions and still no luck. Is it possible that my soundcard is broke. If so is this something that is semi-reasonably easy to replace for this model laptop?

Thank you for the help. Followed your instructions, installed chipset/intel driver and reinstalled audio driver. Still no luck. mediaplayer plays but no sound, no volume icon, and no startup and shutdown system sounds. Is it possible that my soundcard is broken? If this is the case, is this something that can be replaced by myself? thanks.

thank you so much for your patience and knowledge. tried the preceding instructions and received this message after instruction #8.

Cannot continue the Hardware Update.
The wizard couldn't find a better match for your hardware than the software you currently have installed.

Any other ideas? again, thank you very much for your patience.
Keith.

check these out to see if SigmaTel is default audio

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

thanks again Barbara, tried both. SigmaTel is showing as my only choice for audio device. Windows audio is also showing as Automatic for the setting.

The weird thing is that I didn't lose audio all at once. first I think I deleted my audio codecs. got those reinstalled and audio worked for Windows mediaplayer and iTunes but not for flashplayer. reinstalled the newest version of flash player and still no audio. After that used computer for a week or so and rebooted and lost all audio. hopefully some of this info m help. thanks, Keith

thanks again Barbara, tried both.

After that used computer for a week or so and rebooted and lost all audio. hopefully some of this info m help. thanks, Keith

check the BIOS to see if audio is set to On, look at this from Dell, I know it says how to disable audio, but it will give the path on how to check
