I downloaded the drivers, installed them and everything, and under device manager there is now only one "Unknown Device" that is marked with an exclamation mark instead of the previous four. Though, when I went to install the drivers for it using the steps you gave me, whenever I clicked on the folder what I downloaded was in, I could never click okay. And if I manually put in where the folder was located, it said there wasn't anything there.

I'm sorry I am such a hassle! And I really appreciate you helping, bookworm. Hopefully I can attempt to get this resolved soon! It seems it's on the right path now that there's only one thing left.

I know you checked before but just check again to see if Soundmax is default audio
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on
down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

If it is then go here to HP and Step 7 check that audio is [Enabled] in BIOS

4 versions of this board 3 have Realtek audio and 1 has C-Media

realtek audio here http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

Tick I accept the above – wait till site resets then click Next

Download the (Executable file) save to desktop, double click downloaded file on desktop to install

The site is slow

C-Media here at MSI http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?f...=1&prod_no=543

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a restore point and follow instructions

I went and did step 7, and it's Enabled and everything. But, when I go to Sound & Audio Devices, I can't click the down arrow. It says "No Playback Device" and the whole Sound Playback area is grayed out so I can't do anything.

ok check this again, now the driver is installed

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot.

2 days ago my sound stopped working. it wouldnt play any files but when i run the "Realtek HD Audio 3d Demo" it plays perfectly. after 1 1/2 days of installing 100 different drivers (including the ones that came on the cd thats supplied with my motherboard) & restarting my pc 100 times. i just got fed up & reinstalled xp. Everything works fine now. I wonder if MAC has any of these stupid problems????
