Thanks in advance for your help.

HP say this driver needs to be installed before the Soundmax driver, it's the chipset - Restart comp after installation http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...SeriesId=96375

then this audio driver http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport...tem=hd-17950-2

you may need to point XP to the driver this way

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore / select Create a
Restore point and follow instructions

I did everything you said and all was properly installed but there's still no sound. There's still a yellow exclamation point next to SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio under Sound, video and game controllers tab.

Yes, it's installed and says the drivers are updated and it's working properly. And now under sound, it went up to two Unknown Devices that are flagged as yellow.

check these out, see if Soundmax is default audio

Go to Control Panel / Sound & Audio Devices / Audio tab / Sound Playback – click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be something “modem line 0 playback” has been substituted for the correct audio device.

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply > click Start > Reboot.

check this out, look at step 7 to check BIOS

Hello,

First of all... you're doing a great job!

My story:

When I re-installed my computer, the sound didn't work. I asked a friend of mine and he gave me realtak ac97 audio, now I can play sounds, but I still don't hear anything. So maybe it's the wrong driver or something.

I'm also having problems with my sound-- but I made the mistake of posting it in the 'Hardware' section. Could someone take a look at it for me, please?
