NO Sound problem

Hi.
I think I have the same problem as most of the people on this thread. The computer I have cannot detect a sound device and therefore after reading through this I clicked on the Belarc Advisor link and downloaded it like you have suggested to others.

Well, I did as you suggested, but still no luck. I downloaded the drivers from the link you supplied, but I could not get it to install. I extracted the files and then clicked on them expecting an installer to pop up, but nothing. Am I doing something wrong?

first check these out

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device.

try installing this way, use the If No Setup File method

Installing Drivers

Installing Drivers

Create a folder for what you are downloading

Example: Audio
Then download the zipped file to that folder

Then download and install Winzip
Go to the folder and right click and click Winzip extract to here

That will automatically make a folder and unzip files to it ( make a note of file path)

Then go to folder and click on Setup file and follow instructions displayed for installation

If no Setup file

1. Expand "Sound, video and game controllers"
2. Right-click the the yellow flagged device ( or audio device Realtek, Soundmax C-Media etc ) and choose Update Driver
3. In Windows XP SP2, the Update Wizard will prompt to connect to the Windows Update
4. Select "No, not this time" and click Next
5. Select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" and click Next.
6. Select "Search for the best driver in theses locations" and check "Include this location in the search"
7. Click Browse and select the location of downloaded driver
8. Click OK and click Next
9. Wait while the Wizard installs the software
10. Click Finish.

Hey there, have a gateway laptop. due to virus I had to reformat. Clean install of XP sp3, and no sound. Model is mx6445, and there is a known issue with the sound card, Conexant Ac-Link Audio Drivers. I've followed all the advice to work around this issue with no luck.

I would really appreciate it if anyone has any advice on this Issue.

this is confusing, you say MX6445, Belarc says MX6453 and serial number says MX6448, now belarc and serial number models have SigmaTel audio, check the label under notebook to verify please

Thanks for responding Book, appreciate it. Due to logistics I cannot test anything until next week. I will reply then with results. As for the exact model number on the bottom, it is indeed Mx6445. However I think it's a refurbished laptop (am not sure). There is a clear white sticker over the gateway model number tag. I am going to try the sigma tell driver and see what happens. Will post more in a week.

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Problem- Here is what happens when I try to install:

1. Open download, download begins to extract files to C:\Program Files\Intel Desktop Board Audio Driver

2. Whether at 99% or 100% completion, extraction stops and the installer displays the error message, "The system cannot find the file specified."

3. SoundMAX installer opens. I recieve the error message: "Error: Placing Bitmap"

4. I click "Next," agree to the EULA, and the software begins to install.

5. My personal favorite problem comes up: The installer asks me to INSERT A CD. What? "Please insert disk 1 that contains the files Sys/Cleanup.exe"
