Set a System Restore Point before installing drivers just in case

back to Fujitsu Siemens http://support.fujitsu-siemens.com/c...ort/index.html

Downloads / Firmware / Win XP get the Chipset ( Onboard ) Intel 82845G
Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility / install then RESTART your comp. Then install the audio from Realtek.

Hope this helps

Having the same problem. I unplugged my headphones and then plugged them back in later and boom, the sound card has mysteriously disappeared. There's no record of a sound card anywhere, not in the Belarc or in the general device manager, just codecs. It's an onboard soundcard, I checked, and it was working just fine earlier today. I updated the drivers for my modem, chipset, and I tried the RealTec ALC driver update but nothing works. I don't really know a lot about computers or BIOS or anything so I haven't really checked there...

Here's the specs from Belarc.

If I got a separate sound card, would that override the onboard so I'd have sound again? Can this problem be fixed? Is my motherboard just too old and dying? What can I do?

If I got a separate sound card, would that override the onboard so I'd have sound again? Can this problem be fixed? Is my motherboard just too old and dying? What can I do?

First try a System Restore to before sound failed, if that does not correct then see below for drivers

Set a System Restore Point before installing driver just in case

Checked Gateway with your serial number and no sound driver shown, see link
http://support.gateway.com/support/d...s=Windows%20XP

Then checked Gateway for the Keystone motherboard and it shows intergrated audio as a SigmaTEL see link http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&param=2514316

Hope this helps

This is the link to your Compac Presario SR1430NX drivers http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/s...n g=en&os=228

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case

Your audio driver is the Realtek high Definition first in the list

It's a Realtek ALC880 R1.36, if you wish you can also get the most up to date driver from Realtek http://w3serv.realtek.com.tw/downloa...Audio%20CODECs
this site can be slow, just choose one of the download sites ( don't choose the beta )

Hope this helps

hi I have read through this and I have a very similar problem, my sound stopped working as described in the first post, but the day before I had a problem with viruses (I clicked the wrong link and hey presto, boom viruses everywhere, lol), I think I have cleared them all up but my sound still doesn’t work, I have tried that removing sound card thing, but it's inbuilt with the mother board, I think. But anyway here’s my Belarc Advisor thing; (it wouldn’t all fit in one post so it’s in 2, lol, bit obvious really);

No sound, no sound device installed, or controls are greyed out

There is no sound, or at least system sounds including Windows startup and stop sounds are not playing.
The sound control in systray is missing.
Opening Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > displays a properties sheet. The controls for device volume, place volume icon on the task bar, speaker volume, etc on the "Volume" tab are greyed out.
In some cases, sound plays in players other than Windows sounds and Windows Media Player.

Resolution: For Windows XP, open the Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices properties sheet. On the "Audio" tab, for Sound Playback > Default Device click on the 'down arrow' and check to be sure the proper audio device is selected. Typically, the problem will be that something like "modem line 0 playback" has been substituted for the proper audio device.

Changing the selection back to the correct device will fix the problem with no reboot necessary in Windows XP. In other Win OS setups reboot may be required.

This problem occurs frequently enough (often after reinstallation of or changes/updates to Windows) to be described frequently in help forums. The issue and most likely solution has not changed much since 1996 or earlier, when I first encountered it as a novice. The most common cause is the selection of the wrong - typically the modem - device as the default instead of the sound card. The modem cannot play many of the files used for system sounds! Or respond to Media Player sound features. The first step, ALWAYS, is to check and make sure that the right sound device is selected as default in audio device setup.

Unfortunately it seems the advice given in response is often misdirected. Typically, advice is given to uninstall and reinstall the audio card - sometimes recommending physical removal and reinsertion of the card or even its replacement - or reinstallation of the sound card drivers or installation of entirely new drivers for the card. Sometimes users are told they will have to reinstall Windows.

All of these things may - in some cases they apparently do not - result in correction of the basic problem with the selection of the default device. But they seem a lot of trouble to go through, just to change the default device selection from the modem - or some other obsoleted and redundant device - back to the device which should be handling sound on the machine.

Hi, I have the exact same problem, I just reinstalled Windows XP and now I have no sound. In the control panel it says there is no audio device, the sound card is built in, and I didn't receive any CD's when I bought the computer. I ran the windows update, but it still doesn't work. I'm not sure how to check which sound card I have or where to go to download new drivers. Any ideas?
