I think its working now Bookworm! Thank You So Much!!

Iam not 100% know for sure b/c I threw away my old speakers but Im going to buy new ones today. I think its working b/c I don't get the error when I play an MP3 (even though I have no speakers to hear it w/) and when I run the Belarc Profile Report, I have a new component added (SoundBlaster). Also when I go to Device Manager, there is NO MORE exclamation point.

Thank you again.

ok

just had a fresh install of windows - i have a gigabyte motherboard with onboard sound (no card).

I installed the drivers that were on the motherboard cd and whihc worked with previous installs of windows.

No sound, Error ID = 0xC00D11BA, Condition ID = 0x00000000.

I tried updating my realtek sound drivers but i couldnt install them - after disabling and uninstalling the windows UAA driver that was screwing thigns up i was able to install the latest drivers for my sound.

Still doesnt work.

Dowloaded a fresh install of direct x9 from microsoft - didnt work

*EDIT*

ok, after looking at it i dont think my driver was updated after all despite the install going ok - dunno why this has happened

Not sure if this is related but under device manager the only thing with an (!)
is Other devices - PCI device (!). Not really sure but is Sigmatel on board or a card?

Also not sure if you put my serial number in at gateway but it shows a different laptop(MX-6448) than my model number(MX-6453). Earlier before I had made my original post on a different XP install I did try some of those drivers also with the same outcome, no sound.

can you look at this for me -

right click a blank space on the desktop - Properties / Settings - what is listed under Display - this is mine, as you can see it shows the graphis card that is installed - click image to focus

I suspect it's the video driver, did you install this one, which has the SM Bus included http://support.gateway.com/support/d...&uid=220434180

the other Ati download is the driver only, install this driver.

check that you have Net Framework 2 from microsoft installed, Control Panel / Add/Remove Programes

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Barbara, CQ CQ CQ! ;)

Hi again Barbara, aka 'bookworm,' the Sound Queen

How are you? I'm so happy to see you here. I'm having a 'no sound' problem again, but this time it's not due to reformatting or reinstalling XP.

I'm still on the Dell Dimension 4700 which you helped restore sound to in March of 2007. In November of 2008 When my monitor went up in smoke (literally) I switched to my laptop until I could replace the monitor. Recently, I bought an 22-inch ACER flat panel monitor from newegg.com (MNTR ACER|LCD 22" 5MS DVI AL2216WBD) and set it up.
It works fine except there's no sound.

Since there are no built-in speakers like my previous Dimension monitor, I went into Device Manager and enabled the Multimedia Audio Controller. However, upon checking, I saw that there was a yellow question mark re the MAC, (it needs a driver) and thus the Device Manager could not update the driver.

Here's the number for the MAC:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_266E&SUBSYS_01811028&REV_03\3&172 E68DD&0&F2

I tried using the XP OS reinstallation disc which DELL had mailed me last time, but it could not find an update either. I even found our old thread and used the DELL link you provided then, but to no avail. The page was gone and the driver I finally did download did not work. I used System Restore to reset it back, as you had advised.

So I've run out of options now, except to bother you again - I hope you can help me restore the sound on this pc, because I now use Skype for most of my phone calls and so it's even more important to have sound.

Thanks again for your time and consideration.

cheers,
zenmoonstar

ps. Here's Belarc Profile readout (with only part of the apps, Creative is included)

pps. I haven't yet checked the Bios (forgot how to do that - it is F11? or going into F8 - i.e. safe mode? )

Hmmm im at school at the moment and will check as soon as i get home. I know I have the Net Framework 2 for sure. and I'm pretty sure when I installed the ATI drivers it went through several steps and was a lengthy install. Not sure if your saying that's a good or bad thing that the SM us driver was installed with the ATI driver.

Out of curiousity what does the video driver have to do with sound?

I love solving and learning from computer issues, never been stumped like this though.

ya that download has many files that can be ran for installing drivers. I think i just ran the setup.exe

There were some other exe's i could have ran but i think the setup.exe installs them all anyways.

Do you have seperate speakers attatched ?

go here to Dell http://support.euro.dell.com/support...&catid=&impid=

install the Chipset driver - then restart your comp

then install audio driver from the CD Dell sent you this way

Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > right click problem device > click Update Driver - say no to connecting to Internet > Next > select Install software automatically > load Recovery CD > Next

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

can you check these

is SigmTel set as default audio

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

OK I downloaded the Dell chipset driver that you had linked, and installed it - no problem. Followed your instructions in Device Manager using the OS recovery CD Dell had sent me. Got this message:

"Cannot Install this Hardware
The hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find
the necessary software."

The yellow question mark remains on the Multimedia Audio Controller.

Also in very small print on the recovery CD it says:

"Reinstallation CD
MSWindows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2
For distribution only with a new Dell PC
This CD is not for reinstallation of programs or drivers."

So Barbara, what can we do next?

Thanks so much again for your help!

cheers,
zenmoon

Thanks so much again for your help!

cheers,
zenmoon

sorry, you have a sound card installed, if your audio sockets are in an Expansion slot, you need this driver
see here - http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...0io%20slot.JPG

driver http://support.creative.com/Downloads/welcome.aspx
XP and Vista first in list

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Hi Barb, not sure if its in the expansion slot - how can i tell this?
Seem to remember the mike jack going into a round hole in the I/O section...

Also, the Sound Blaster card is 24-bit - and Dell did send me a CD for that, should I perhaps reinstall it from CD?

cheers,
~z
