here's a pic of my tower

Hi SQ Barb,

Just took a quick pic of the back of my tower - guess the sound card is below - where the two small round portals are, yes? (green, blue, etc.)

Here's the link to the photo:

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h1...earview001.jpg

Wow, haven't used this pc in awhile - needs a good can of air & dustbuster!

Anyway I downloaded the driver you linked, but can't open it - think i need winzip or some such progie. Thought i already had it but guess not... gonna dl it now & try again to open this and install it.

stay tuned...

cheers,
~z

If Dell sent a disc with the driver use that to install and do this way

Right click My Computer > Properties > Hardware Tab > Device Manager > right click problem device > click Update Driver - say no to connecting to Internet > Next > select Install software automatically > load Recovery CD > Next

Set a System Restore Point before installing just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions

Hi dear friend, here's what I've done thus far:

-downloaded the chipset you linked
-downloaded the driver you linked but couldn't unzip it (using winRAR)
-tried installing the Dell-sent SoundBlaster CD as per your instructions but still got the 'can't find software' error
-uninstalled SoundBlaster and then reinstalled the full program configured for a mike (since I have no speakers)
-plugged in the headset but still no sound...
-tried Skype with a friend, still no sound...

But do still have the yellow conflict markers in Device Manager over the multimedia audio controller...

AND the Line-In still shows 'muted' in Volume Control - I seem to remember that therein lies the problem, but what to do????

I wonder, do you think I should just buy speakers & maybe this would all work then?

I appreciate your patience as always!

cheers,
zenmoon

UPDATE: Woo hoo!

Have sound now only through my headset, but still that's great! Just did a System Restore and reinstalled SoundBlaster with the Dell CD. Had to do it twice, because the first time I got a little carried away & first uninstalled the old SB progie & deleted all the Creative Registry files. Then several error messages kept popping up (i.e. 'can't find Creative xyz file'). After the second reinstall, plugged in the mike and VOILA!!!

Thanks so much for your help, Queen Barbara. May the long time Audio Sun shine upon you and yours!

cheers,
~zenmoon

Smile quick update

Just a quick update. I finally got the mike to work by disabling the Multimedia Audio Controller in Device Manager - so I can now use Skype again.

This is after setting a system restore point, (and performing all above steps) just in case.

Thanks again, Ms Queen of Sound! Have a great day!

go here to Asus, your Realtek audio driver is there http://support.asus.com.tw/download/...Language=en-us

this driver will only work if your audio plugs are one the I/O plate – see here – click image to focus
