Hi
I have a similar problem I accidently deleted my audio device and since then have been trying to reinstall one.
I tried Realtex AC'97 but it came up that it couldn't start it (code 10).
Can anyone help me please?

I did this - as before it all seemed to install fine, but still no sound and no change in device manager! This is so annoying. Everything seems to show up in the folders where it was installed, but when I try to open something there like Soundman or Rltek update/remove manager simply nothing happens.

check this out
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

Also, in device manager, the PCI device under other devices has no driver installed for it - not sure what a PCI device is, but could this be affecting my problem?
Sorry for double post - no edit option on my older post.

Look at this from HP, you need to check if audio is Enabled in the BIOS
Step 7
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/d...cname=bph07154
do not Reset the default BIOS, go through BIOS to audio and Enable
