check windows audio service
Start / Control Panel / Administrative Tools / Component Services / a separate window will open – in left pane click Services(Local) from the tree / Scroll down to Windows Audio service / if the service is Disabled or Manual right click > select Properties > under Startup Type change to Automatic > click Apply / click Start > OK Reboot

check this to see if Realtek is default audio, if not you need to check the BIOS to see if audio is Enabled
Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device
to enter the BIOS
1. By pressing <Del> immediately after switching the system on, or
2. By pressing the <Del> key when the following message appears briefly at
the bottom of the screen during the POST (Power On Self Test )
the Main menu opens
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...in%20menue.JPG
use the down arrow to select Intergrated Peripherals - press Enter key
http://www.overclockeddoc.com/bookwo...eripherals.JPG
if AC97 audio is Disabled - use down arrow to select
then + key to change
press F10 key to Save & Exit
y key to accept changes
XP will load
if needed install audio driver again

had another look at HP, you need to install the Microsft UAA before installing the audio drivers - it's here, why HP don't link this driver really bugs me
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/g...reg_R1002_USEN
install audio drivers again
Set a System Restore Point before installing EACH driver just in case
Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools / System Restore – click radio button Create a restore point and follow instructions
p.s this is the Realtek Sound Effect manager, you may find it interesting, when audio installed and working

Yeah - I found out that with my original install actually - it prompted me that I needed that so I went myself and got it, then installed the drivers I needed. At first I thought it worked because after I did it the drivers didn't prompt me to install it any more, but as you know they still didn't install properly.
After a little digging and poking round I found this. I think it could explain what's going on..
Quote:
In Windows XP, if we need to run a High Definition Audio (HDA) device, we would have to install the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver. This is either the KB835221 (for SP1) or the newer KB888111 (for SP2 or SP1).
However, this does NOT work for the latest Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate Release. If you’ve already tried installing the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate v3264 with a High Definition Audio (HDA) device in your computer, I’ll bet you have encountered problems with the audio drivers as I did.
When you try installing the KB888111 which works for SP1 and SP2, it will not work for Service Pack 3, at least for the current SP3 RC v3264. Instead, you will be prompted with a message saying that the current service pack installed is newer than the fix you are trying to apply. Even the older KB835221 does not work.
It looks like Microsoft “forgot” to add the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) driver for High Definition Audio devices in the latest release candidate of the Windows XP Service Pack 3. We hope they will not forget to add it into the final release. Fortunately, all is not lost. There is a way to fix this problem for the current release candidate.

After I installed this and got UAA working properly, it finally recognized the hardware and I have sound! After all this turns out bloody windows SP was the problem!
Thanks again bookworm, really appreciate your help with all this. So there's the answer if a problem like this ever crops up for you again
