check this

Check Control Panel/ Sound & Audio Devices/ Audio tab/ Sound Playback click on down arrow and check that the correct audio is selected. Typically the problem will be they something like "modem line 0 playback" might have been substituted for the proper audio device

no sound and tried installing drivers

Hi,

I recently reformatted my computer. I have done this before and am having the same problem as last time. I can only hear system sounds. Last time I think I only installed the driver from the manufacturer (realtek high def), but I cannot remember. I tried installing the driver from the manufacturer with no luck. It currently says I have no sound device. Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated! Here is a belarc report of my system:

Hey, just today I switched computer cases so I had to move everything from my old case to my new one. Before I switched my sound was working but when I was finished putting my parts into the new case and turned on the computer, my sound/mic was not working. I thought it was the extra media slots I had (it's plugged into the motherboard, removeable.) so I removed the extra slots from the motherboard and plugged in my sound/mic into the back of the computer, onboard. Restarting the computer did not help either, I checked if there was any yellow exclamation marks on anything, only under 'Other devices' there was: 'SM Bus Controller' and 'Unknown device'. (I am quite sure these were here before though.)

I used to have issues with my sound, but I fixed it by installing the Realtek AC '97 Audio drivers. Here's the everest summary:
